The Northwestern part of Pennsylvania is famous for being the heart of the state’s oil industry: the first oil well in the United States was drilled in Titusville. The city of Erie and its environs are the economic powerhouse of the region. The other defining characteristic of this part of the state is the vast Allegheny National Forest.
