Hinda and Linda have been able to complete a lot of the work on this site, and have been able to mount several shows featuring work from The Pennsylvania Project, due to generous grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
Hinda Schuman (L) was born and raised in Brooklyn. She lived for many years in Vermont, and has lived in Philadelphia since 1983. She met Linda Johnson when they each began working for The Philadelphia Inquirer. Hinda’s work has been shown internationally. She is known throughout the region as a brilliant documentary photographer and photography teacher, and is the author of ‘Dear Shirley,’ a compelling photographic memoir. She is a damned good cross country skier.
The car (C) is a 1970 Astro Blue Chevy Chevelle Malibu with SS wheels. It has a 350 engine, with 300 horses. The car was born in Detroit, MI, might have grown up in New Jersey, and has lived in Pennsylvania since 1998.
Linda Johnson (R), was born in Pittsburgh and moved to Philadelphia in 1981 to pursue a degree in the visual arts. She was a photographer at The Philadelphia Inquirer for twenty years. Two of her images from 9/11 are archived in the Library of Congress. She has exhibited in group and solo shows, and has won accolades for her work, mostly from her mother. She is passionately committed to documentary photography. When she is not shooting, she frequently falls into the black hole of designing websites.
This photograph was taken by friend and former Philadelphia Inquirer photographer John Slavin. John has documented everything from two presidential inaugurations to the American treasure that is Route 66 to racing at the Bonneville Speedway to the Day of the Dead in Oaxaca. His work has been celebrated in many galleries throughout Philadelphia and its suburbs as well as in galleries–including the prestigious Leica Gallery — from New York City to New Mexico.
